Polymethylene polyphenylene isocyanate, commonly referred to as polymeric MDI, with the CAS number 9016 – 87 – 9, is a crucial raw material in the chemical industry.

Physical and Chemical Properties

It is typically a brownish – colored oily liquid. Its viscosity at 25ºC is an important parameter, usually falling within a certain range, which significantly affects processing conditions, especially in foaming applications.
The content of NCO (isocyanate groups) is another vital factor. It represents the percentage of reactive isocyanate groups and directly impacts the stoichiometry and the resulting properties of the polyurethane polymer. Other properties like density, acid content, and hydrolysable chlorine content are carefully controlled to ensure consistent reactivity and product performance. Chemically, it is a mixture of diisocyanates with different degrees of polymerization, and its general formula is $(C_{15}H_{10}N_2O_2)_n$ .
